Hammarlund made high-quality communications receivers from the 1930s through the 1970s. The Hammarlund Manufacturing Company was founded by Oscar Hammarlund in New York City, New York, United States in 1910. When the company was dissolved in 1973, it was among the USA's very oldest producers of radio equipment.

Model HQ-180A was made from 1963-1972. This receiver followed the success of the original HQ-180 and added improved mechanical and electrical stability, tunable BFO for CW or fixed BFO for optimum SSB, silicon rectifiers, and more. Other enhancements included antenna trimmer, noise limiter, RF gain, S-meter, stand-by and AVC on/off.

The HQ-180A is a general coverage receiver and provides continuous coverage of broadcast frequencies from 540 KHz to 30 Mhz. These frequencies are divided into six bands, which you select with the large rectangular control in the center of the radio's faceplate. The tuning dials are keystone-shaped, one to each side of the square signal meter in the center. The amateur bands are all band spread:  3.44-4.04, 6.81-7.3, 13.98-14.425, 20.925-21.6 and 27.89-29.7 MHz.

This radio is the HQ-180AC and is the same as the HQ-180A, except it has the optional 24-hour analog clock/timer, visible at upper left on the radio. When new in 1966, this radio cost about $520. That's $4,200 in today's dollars (2020), so only serious communications experts and ham radio operators purchased it. I bought this set from a local seller in 2017 who was the second owner.  It was in near perfect condition. I cleaned it up, replaced the main filter capacitors, and gave it complete IF and RF alignment.

117 VAC 50/60 Hz 120W. 19 x 10.5 x 13" 38 Lbs.

Pictured here on top of the radio is the complimentary Hammarlund S-200 speaker. It features an extended range 6 by 9-inch speaker (8-watt capacity) housed in a metal cabinet and is the perfect match for the HQ-180A.
